INTRODUCTION

Eye flu is the condition in which eyes are infected by any organism whether it is viral or bacterial. It is also called Conjunctivitis. In this condition inflammation of the eyes is seen which causes redness, watering, and itching of the eyes. The same condition is also called conjunctivitis.

This condition is common in humid conditions as the organisms may easily multiply and transfer from one person to another in this weather. This condition is highly contagious as it may affect one another very fast. Usually, eye flu (Conjunctivitis) is viral but then superadded by bacterial infection.

  • WATERY OR THICK DISCHARGE

  • SWELLING OVER EYELIDS
  • DISCHARGE THROUGH NOSE
  • SOME MAY HAVE BLURRED VISION

  • Usually, more than 40% population suffers from eye flu every year, but it is not noticed such due to which it is self-limiting within 2-3 days.
  • Usually, it is caused by flu-like viruses which cause the common flu to a person.
  • Exposure to allergens, pollens, etc

There is no need for any blood tests for eye conjunctivitis but in some cases, we can do CBC for any bacterial infection.

We can prevent the risk of eye flu by using good hygienic practices like

  • Wash your hand by using 6 steps of hand washing
  • Avoid sharing towels and personal cosmetic items.
  • Use clean tissue paper for eye/face cleaning.
  • Use proper protective eye care equipment like goggles while driving and going in dust.
  • Avoid frequent rubbing of eyes.
  • Avoid close contact with the infected person, or keep a safe distance from the infected person

As eye flu is a prevalent condition, in many cases it is cured itself or by taking care at home without taking any medication. In case you are infected by eye flu follow these tips which include-

  • Avoid frequent touching of the infected eyes as it may worsen the condition.
  • Do cold compress with the help of a clean napkin Other such cloth.
  • Use protective eyewear as it prevents dust and direct sunlight which reduces the symptoms.
  • Do not use contact lenses when you have an infection
  • Clean eyes 3 to 4 times with clean water.
  • Use good hygienic practices.

TREATMENT OF EYE FLU

  • For treatment, it is always better to take expert medical advice

  • Antiviral eye drops or antibacterial eye drops.
  • Anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs  like Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, etc
  • Anti-allergic drugs
  • In some cases, oral antibiotics may be needed.
  • Will advise you to use protective eyewear.
  • Use lubricative drops because your eyes may become dry.
